The Amiga series of personal computers was launched by Commodore in 1985. This original model belongs to the mid-1980s category of computers equipped with 16 or 16/32-bit processors, a minimum of 256 KB RAM, mouse-driven GUIs, and notably enhanced graphics and audio capabilities compared to prior 8-bit systems. Other computers from this era include the Atari ST, Macintosh, and Acorn Archimedes. Powered by the Motorola 68000 microprocessor, what sets the Amiga apart from its peers is its specialized hardware designed to boost graphics and sound performances, inclusive of features like sprites and a blitter. Additionally, it runs on a pre-emptive multitasking operating system named AmigaOS.
The Amiga 1000 debuted in July 1985, but due to manufacturing hiccups, its wide availability was delayed until early 1986. The most popular in the series, the Amiga 500, was launched in 1987, concurrently with its more adaptable counterpart, the Amiga 2000. 1990 saw the introduction of the Amiga 3000, with the Amiga 500 Plus and Amiga 600 coming in March 1992. The series was rounded off with the Amiga 1200 and Amiga 4000 in late 1992. In total, an impressive 4.85 million units of the Amiga line were sold.
