The Atari ST represents a series of personal computers launched by Atari Corporation, following the Atari 8-bit family. The first model, the Atari 520ST, saw a limited release between April and June 1985, becoming widely accessible in July. Notably, it was the first personal computer to feature a bitmapped color GUI, built on a variation of Digital Research's GEM as of February 1985. In 1986, the Atari 1040ST, equipped with 1 MB RAM, became the inaugural home computer with a cost-per-kilobyte less than US$1.
When Jack Tramiel acquired the consumer division assets of Atari, Inc., forming Atari Corporation, the 520ST's design was completed in just five months, led by Shiraz Shivji. The ST, alongside computers like the Macintosh, Amiga, Apple IIGS, and Acorn Archimedes, belongs to the mid-1980s era of computers. These systems came with 16 or 32-bit processors, a minimum of 256 KB RAM, and were operated with mouse-driven graphical interfaces. The "ST" in its name symbolizes "Sixteen/Thirty-two", alluding to the Motorola 68000's 16-bit external bus and 32-bit core architecture. |
