IREM M92 Arcade

The Irem M92 is an arcade system board developed and manufactured by Irem Corporation, a Japanese video game company. It was released in 1991 and was the successor to the Irem M72 arcade system. The M92 was known for its advanced graphics and sound capabilities, which allowed it to deliver a high-quality gaming experience for its time. The Irem M92 hardware featured a V30 processor, which was a NEC-made variant of the Intel 8086/8088 processor, running at 16 MHz. For graphics, it used a custom graphics chipset capable of delivering detailed sprites and smooth scrolling. The sound was generated using a Yamaha YM2151 sound chip for FM synthesis, along with an Irem GA20 sound chip for PCM sample playback, providing a rich audio experience. Several popular and well-received arcade games were developed for the Irem M92 system, including: GunForce: A run-and-gun platformer that featured a variety of weapons and large, detailed levels. Blade Master: A side-scrolling hack-and-slash action game that showcased the M92's smooth scrolling and animation capabilities. Lethal Thunder: A vertically scrolling shoot-'em-up that had impressive graphics and sound effects. Undercover Cops: A beat-'em-up game with detailed sprite work and a variety of different stages. In the Hunt: A submarine-based scrolling shooter with detailed underwater graphics and a variety of enemies and bosses. The Irem M92 arcade system was well-received for its graphical and audio capabilities but eventually faced stiff competition from other arcade systems, such as the Capcom CPS-1 and CPS-2, as well as the Neo Geo MVS. The M92 was eventually succeeded by the Irem M107 arcade system in 1993. Although the Irem M92 is no longer in active use in arcades, its games continue to be enjoyed by enthusiasts through arcade emulation platforms like MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator), preserving the legacy of this influential arcade system.
